Signs You Have a Rat Problem
Rats are nocturnal, so most activity happens while you’re asleep. Scratching or squeaking sounds in walls and ceilings at night are often the first clue. During the day, look for dark, capsule-shaped droppings along baseboards or in cabinets, gnaw marks on wood or wiring, and greasy rub marks where rats travel the same path along walls and beams.
Chewed food packaging in a pantry or storage area is another reliable indicator. What surprises many property owners is how little space a rat needs to get inside. Gaps as small as roughly half an inch around rooflines, eaves, foundation cracks, or utility penetrations are enough.
Roof Rats vs. Norway Rats in the San Antonio Area
Two species account for most rat problems in this region. Knowing which one you’re dealing with helps target the treatment correctly.
Norway Rats
Larger and bulkier, Norway rats burrow near building foundations and ground-level areas. They’re poor climbers, so infestations tend to stay low: crawl spaces, utility areas, and perimeter burrows.
Roof Rats
Slender and agile, roof rats climb trees, fences, and utility lines to reach attics, eaves, and upper areas of structures. They’re the more common call in this part of Texas. Mild winters and a dense tree canopy keep them active year-round, which means an attic infestation can grow quickly if it isn’t addressed.

Health Risks & Property Damage
Rats carry diseases including leptospirosis, salmonellosis, and rat-bite fever, transmitted through droppings, urine, and direct contact. Because a rat’s front teeth grow continuously, it gnaws constantly on whatever is available: wood framing, insulation, and electrical wiring. Chewed wiring is a recognized fire-hazard risk and one of the more serious consequences of a long-undetected infestation.
How We Approach Rat Control
Our technicians are licensed through the Texas Department of Agriculture and apply all products strictly according to label guidelines. We use professional-grade bait stations, snap traps, and rodent exclusion methods matched to the specific species and entry points found during inspection.
We’re active advocates for the dog rescue community throughout Texas, and that shapes how we work on every rat job. Bait stations and traps can pose a risk to curious pets if placed carelessly, so we factor pet safety into both product selection and placement decisions. The treatment is designed to protect your property without creating a new hazard for animals in or around the home.
You won’t talk to a salesperson when you call. Our employees are trained to identify the problem and offer solutions, not to upsell services you don’t need.
